Why Are Doulas Necessary?
What Support Does a Doula Provide?
Numerous clinical studies have found that the continuous support a doula provides tends to result in:
- Shorter labors with fewer complications
- Lower incidence of cesareans (C-Sections)
- Reduced need for medical interventions such as Pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps, or vacuum extraction
- Decreased requests for pain medication and epidurals
- Positive birthing experience
Doula-assisted mothers were four times less likely to have a low birth weight (LBW) baby, two times less likely to experience a birth complication involving themselves or their baby, and significantly more likely to initiate breastfeeding.
